I will most likely stay off of the internet today. Whether I would be checking entertainment news, sports news, national news – it doesn’t matter. Anything I read today will be in doubt in my mind. Is it true? Does it sound too ridiculous to be true? While that sounds like typical thoughts that run through your mind when reading wrestling news on a daily basis, today is the day where all news outlets have the opportunity to print fake news and rumors. Happy April Fools’ Day.
I thought about researching the history of the day for this blog. Where its origins lie, some of the biggest pranks, etc. After about ten seconds of considering this, I realized that I don’t care. I really don’t. I hate the whole point of today. You can say I’m no fun, or that I need to lighten up, but the fact of the matter is I will never understand the point of an entire day trying to trick people into believing things that aren’t true.
It is also a day where you spend half of it shaking your head at the stuff people try and get by. Some of the “pranks” are so ridiculous that reading them would remind people that it is April Fools’ Day. That is what happened to me today. I didn’t plan
on this as my topic. I was deciding between talking about the latest episode of “The Americans” or the fact that ESPN is now covering the WWE – but before sitting down to write I decided to browse the web like I usually do. Then I read about a Back to the Future/Fast and Furious crossover movie that was coming out. “Oh yeah,” I thought to myself. “It’s April first.”
Even though most of the news will be legit today, I’m still going to avoid it. No matter what, every site will try and sneak in their “fool” news. The worst part is, that no matter how much I keep reminding myself that it is April Fools’ Day, I will still get fooled by something. It happens every year. Some article will be so believable and I will forget what day it is. A few times, I didn’t even realize it. I remembered the news weeks or months down the road and was wondering why nothing further had been revealed. It sucks finding out in October that you were fooled on April 1st.
So, I’ve decided to stay off the internet today. Besides plugging this blog on social media, I’m staying away. I don’t care if I miss the biggest real news story of the year. I’m supposed to be paying attention daily to wrestling news for the feature Vince and I are working on here for VinceRussoBrand.com but today I’m ignoring it all. Whether it is because of the sheer ridiculousness of the day or that I don’t want to be fooled, I will find other things to do. I have a stack of comic books that I am behind in reading. My DVR is full of programs that I am behind. I could probably even clean out my car (but this one is unlikely.) I know two of my friends will try and fool me today. It is a given. I might just ignore their phone calls as well. Have fun today, internet. Prank it up! Just leave me out of it.
