PUTTING OTHERS FIRST
Don’t let anybody tell you otherwise---professional wrestling is a self-serving business, as is just about any other business out there that any of us have ever been associated with. Since the focus is on MONEY, and always on MONEY--- despite the fact that Jesus told us that we can’t serve two masters—him and money---the game becomes about me, myself and I, as we look to always self-promote, and position ourselves to be “above”, or “better” than everybody else we are working “with”.
But, who’s kidding who? We aren’t working “with” anybody; we are all working for ourselves, thinking about ourselves, thinking we are more important than everybody and anybody that we cross paths with on a daily basis. We put ourselves first, without even thinking twice about it, and that doesn’t just include strangers, or co-workers---it also includes our friends and families as well.
In looking ourselves in the mirror, we all have to accept that our self-serving attitudes are just a part of our make-up, who we are. It’s the way of the entire world, and we have ALL fallen into the trap. I know I did. If I didn’t put myself before others while working in the wrestling business—I would have simple been chewed up and spit out. It’s just the way the game was played.
But, by the grace of God when I was saved in 2002, in saw things in a much different light. All of a sudden it wasn’t about me anymore, but rather what GOD wanted me to do for HIM. The first two things he taught me were to love HIM, and love OTHERS. What that meant was not only thinking about others before me---but, putting others before me. That was the message when Jesus himself fell to his knees and washed the feet of His apostles . . . one, by one. And, from that point on that’s exactly how I started living my life. To the best of my capabilities—and it was an absolute chore at times---I began to think about others first, and put their feelings before mine. Suddenly it became about everybody else, and not about me.
Here’s a trick. You know that you are saved, and living for the Lord, when you start doing everything in your life AGAINST the grain---opposite of the way that you always used to do things. That’s when you realize that you are no longer living for yourself---but, rather, for HIM. Immediately, things start to change—they become easier---MUCH EASIER. And, you know why that is? Because when you change, and put others before you, then those who you’ve honored begin to do the same thing in return. They can’t help to notice that you are no longer the “old” you and that something has changed in your life for the better. And guess what happens next---they want to know WHAT that is, and HOW they can get it to. Therefore, one, by one, other people start becoming infected with your giving attitude. They liked the idea of you treating them special, now they, in turn, want to treat someone else the way that you treated them.
It happens—trust me---and, the only way you will ever really know is to try it. Be a leader, lead by example, be God’s shinning light and let people see through YOU---how HE truly created us to be!
