EXPLAIN, EXPLAIN!

May 8, 2015

I don’t understand how a nationally televised show like Monday Night Raw can be so poorly written at times.  Here is a show that is on prime time television, getting over 3 million viewers, and at times is presented like it is scripted by a bunch of fourth graders.  Let’s take this week’s episode as an example.

Lana is now coming out waving to the crowd, smiling, wanting cheers, and dancing with Fandango.  LANA.  The same Lana that has verbally abused the audience for over a year and only smiles when she is talking about Vladimir Putin or Rusev.  The same Lana that despises everything about the United States of America.  I understand the need to grow characters and change them so they do not became stale with the audience, but at least tell us why these people are acting differently.  In the words of the mighty Daleks “Explain, explain!”

One of the main jobs of a writer – in any form of entertainment – is to engage your audience by letting them into the minds of the characters and having them understand why they do the things they do.  Having Lana become a babyface with absolutely no explanation is insulting to the viewers’ intelligence.  Honestly, these people should be ashamed to call themselves writers.  At the very least wouldn’t a backstage reporter, such as Renee Young, try to find out why Lana is acting the way she is?  Not one character on the WWE roster would be confused enough to investigate?

We also saw the return of Tamina this week on Raw, and for absolutely no reason, she is acting as Naomi’s muscle.  I can’t even remember the last time Tamina was on WWE television but I think it is safe to say it has been almost a year.  Can we not have a reason of why she has decided to align herself with Naomi as soon as she returns?

Why are Tyson Kidd and Cesaro a tag team?  Why does Seth Rollins ignore the fact that Kane choke-slammed him at Extreme Rules?  Why does Brock Lesnar quietly accept his suspension?  Why is Erick Rowan re-aligning himself with Luke Harper?  Why would people like Triple H, Stephanie McMahon, and Seth Rollins continue to employee J&J Security when they have NEVER done anything successfully to help The Authority?  Why did Summer Rae conspire with The Miz to screw over Mizdow?  I could go on all day.

Am I the only one who thinks of questions like these?  As paying customers, do WWE fans not demand explanations for why these people do what they do?  As a perfectionist, does Vince McMahon not watch his own show and think “what the #&$% is this?”

For those of you that will want to tell me to be patient and wait for the explanation in due time I have two words for you:  Brie Bella.  I have zero faith that any of these questions will ever be explained.  One thing that Marvel Comics’ Jason Aaron said on The Swerve this week is that it seems like the characters in WWE don’t have history and that we are supposed to forget everything that has happened in the past.  He is exactly right.

Monday Night Raw is the most poorly written show on television today.  I beg anyone to find me a show with worse character development. (Besides Smackdown)
