WRITING RAW

July 7, 2015

After a brief conversation with @cowboysteel66 on Twitter last night, I decided that for today’s blog I would post a three-hour Raw script I wrote last December.  I wrote it as a challenge to myself at the time, where I knew I could write a more entertaining show than what we would actually see that week on TV.  Whether I succeeded or not, well that’s up to you.

Keep in mind that this was written in December of 2014 and directly followed what was going on in WWE at that time (Authority was out of power, TLC PPV had recently happened, etc.)  Not everything will make sense with current storylines, and some of it may seem outright stupid to you.  There may be things you do think are stupid, and that’s ok, because some of it I would change if I were writing it today.  All I ask you to consider is if this would be an entertaining show that keeps people tuned in throughout the three hours, sets up future broadcasts, and makes people want to tune in the following week.

This is by no means an official WWE script format.  I did time everything as the writer’s would have to, though, with 16 segments and 15 commercial breaks (44 mins of TV, 16 mins of commercial each hour).  Yes, it is possible to write a three-hour show without any commercials during matches.

Several of you have asked how I would do things differently, or what I would do if I was writing Raw.  Here’s your example:

SEGMENT #1 (8:00-8:08)

IN RING OPEN (8 MIN)

  • Vince McMahon entrance to ring.  Vince announces that he is guest GM for the evening.  Brings up WWE Title, and how there used to be a rule that it must be defended at least every 30 days.  Says his daughter, his son in law, all the guest GM’s haven’t enforced the rule.  But instead of stripping Brock of the title, he is going to make him defend it tonight.  No point in waiting til the Royal Rumble, tonight will be Brock vs. John Cena for the title.  He wants a match for the ages, a PPV classic for free on Raw.  To ensure, he wants a referee that won’t be afraid to call it down the middle, enforce the rules, and make sure the best man does indeed win – and that referee will be Roman Reigns.

  • Brock Lesner/Paul Heyman/Seth Rollins entrance to ring.  Heyman says Brock has always been a fighting champion, and has no issues defending tonight, but as champion, should have a say in the referee.  Heyman says if there is going to be a guest official it should be Seth Rollins.  Vince says, in the interest of fairness, he will meet Paul halfway.  There will be a match tonight between Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins, with the winner becoming the referee for the WWE Championship main even match tonight.

  • John Cena entrance to ring.  Cena says it doesn’t matter who the referee is, he had Lesner beat at Night of Champions, and tonight he will finish what he started and get his title back.  Cena and Lesner get nose-to-nose.  Heyman and Rollins convince Lesner to step back and save it for the match.

COMMERCIAL #1 (8:08-8:11)

SEGMENT # 2 (8:11-8:22)

BACKSTAGE DEAN AMBROSE/VINCE MCMAHON (1 MIN)

  • Vince is in his office on phone.  Dean Ambrose enters.  Vince hangs up, tells Dean even though he lost to Bray Wyatt, he did a hell of a job at TLC.  Ambrose says he wants a rematch, as he doesn’t want an exploding TV monitor to be what people remember of Dean Ambrose vs. Bray Wyatt.  Vince grants his rematch, but wants a match more brutal than TLC.  Tonight Dean will face Bray in an ambulance match.

IN RING (3 MIN)

  • Rusev/Lana entrance to ring.  Lana talks about how disgraceful it must be for the United States to see their championship belt around the waist of Rusev.  She says the only thing more disgraceful would be for Rusev to retire the belt and give it to Vladimir Putin.  She says he is going to do just that, and focus his efforts on becoming WWE Champion

  • Vince McMahon entrance to stage.  Vince says that the belt is his property, and if Rusev gives it to Putin he will be fired.  But, in the interest of fairness, he will give Rusev an opportunity to do as he desires with no punishment…that is if he successfully defends the title at the Royal Rumble against a mystery opponent of Vince’s choosing.  If Rusev wins, he can bring title to Putin.  If he loses, the title stays in WWE.  Of course, that is if he makes it to the Royal Rumble.  He tells Rusev he has a non-title match right now against Ryback.

NON TITLE MATCH: RUSEV (W/LANA) VS RYBACK (6 MIN)

  • Rusev goes over clean. Ryback passes out in Accolade.

BACKSTAGE MIZ/MIZDOW/NAOMI (30 SEC)

  • Miz tells Naomi that he was able to convince Vince McMahon to give her a Divas title shot tonight against Nikki Bella.  She says she doesn’t know how to thank him.  He says seeing the title around her waist would be thanks enough.

BACKSTAGE DEAN AMBROSE (30 SEC)

  • Dean gets ready for match.  Announcers put over match is coming up soon.

COMMERCIAL #2 (8:22-8:25)

SEGMENT #3 (8:25-8:29)

HIGHLIGHT/BACKSTAGE/IN-RING JACK SWAGGER/JBL (4 MIN)

  • Announcers put over upcoming Rusev/mystery opponent Royal Rumble match.  They show highlights of Rusev beating Swagger at TLC.

  • JBL, on camera, chastises Swagger for failing twice at getting the United States title from Rusev.  He hopes the mystery opponent will be someone strong enough, tough enough, and man enough to beat Rusev.  He is tired of seeing Rusev clobber losers like Swagger who disgrace their country.

  • Swagger is watching backstage on a monitor.  He breaks the monitor and heads towards the ring.

  • Jack Swagger entrance to announce table.  Swagger attacks JBL.  He pulls him out of his chair, throws him into ring steps, and grabs ring bell.  JBL gets up, and Swagger hits him over head with bell.

COMMERCIAL #3 (8:29-8:32:30)

SEGMENT #4 (8:32:30-8:46:30)

BACKSTAGE JBL/RENEE YOUNG (30 SEC)

  • JBL sits in medical room with ice pack on head.  Renee Young starts to ask him about Swagger, but JBL cuts her off and challenges Swagger to a match next week on Raw.

MATCH DEAN AMBROSE VS. BRAY WYATT (12 MIN)

  • Bray goes over by throwing Ambrose into back of ambulance and drives off.  There is a camera man in the ambulance filming the finish from the inside.  He is trapped in back with Ambrose when ambulance drives off.

BACKSTAGE RYBACK/BO DALLAS (1 MIN)

  • Bo Dallas approaches Ryback in the locker room, and gives him a sarcastic pep talk about his loss.  After telling Ryback he needs to Bo-lieve, Ryback lays him out.

BACKSTAGE A.J. LEE/RENEE YOUNG/VINCE MCMAHON (30 SEC)

  • A.J. Lee exits Vince’s office crying.  Renee Young tries to ask her why, but Vince comes out and yells “Shut the camera off, damn it.”

COMMERCIAL #4 (8:46:30-8:50)

SEGMENT #5 (8:50-8:53)

BACKSTAGE A.J. LEE/RENEE YOUNG (1 MIN)

  • A.J. is getting into her car in the parking lot.  Renee runs up again, and asks her what happened.  She says she was fired.  Renee asks why.  A.J. says she isn’t going to get into specifics, she will let her lawyer handle that.  She says despite what goes on behind the scenes, she always showed up to work and gave 100% no matter what and never complained and never got into the drama.  She says she is a scapegoat, and is not saying anymore.  She gets in car and drives off.

BACKSTAGE PAIGE/EMMA/DAN ENGLER (30 SEC)

  • Emma is teaching referee Dan Engler how to dance like her.  We hear Paige scream in disgust in the background.  She walks in, and kicks the crap out of both Emma and the referee.  Announcers wonder what set Paige off.

BACKSTAGE VINCE MCMAHON/CHARLOTTE/SASHA BANKS (1 MIN)

  • Charlotte and Sasha Banks enter Vince’s office.  Vince thanks them for coming.  He says he saw their NXT match and was impressed with both of them.  Sasha says she wants a rematch for the title.  Vince tells her to hold on, because he asked them here for a different reason.  He says they are both ready to join the WWE roster.  Due to an earlier incident, one roster spot has opened up in the Divas division.  Tonight, the two of them will have a match, with the winner becoming a WWE Diva.

BACKSTAGE ROMAN REIGNS/SETH ROLLINS (30 SEC)

  • Split screen of both wrestlers walking down hallway as announcers put over the match is next.

COMMERCIAL #5 (8:53-8:56)

SEGMENT #6 (8:56-9:08)

MATCH ROMAN REIGNS VS. SETH ROLLINS (12 MIN)

  • False finish:  ref bump, Brock Lesner runs in and hits F5 on Reigns.  John Cena runs in after Brock, they brawl out of ring down ramp.  Massive amounts of security pull them apart.  Rollins wakes up the ref, covers Reigns, but Reigns kicks out.

  • Finish: ref bump again.  Reigns spears Rollins.  No ref to count.  Reigns tries to wake up ref, Rollins hits Reigns with low blow.  Brawl to outside of ring.  Rollins sets up table, but it doesn’t get used Reigns throws Rollins back in ring.  Reigns goes up top, Big Show comes from crowd and choke slams Reigns from the top turnbuckle through the table.  He rolls Reigns back in the ring.  Rollins hits curb stomp.  Ref is up.  Rollins covers for the win.  Seth Rollins is referee for main event.  Big Show laughs and escapes through crowd.  Reigns comes to, looks around for Big Show.  He asks Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler where Big Show went, and they show him the direction through the crowd.  Reigns follows the path of Big Show through crowd.

COMMERCIAL #6 (9:08-9:11)

SEGMENT #7 (9:11-9:12:30)

BACKSTAGE ROMAN REIGNS/BIG SHOW/PAUL HEYMAN (1 MIN)

  • Roman Reigns looks around backstage unsuccessfully for Big Show.

  • Paul Heyman is shown thanking Big Show and putting him in a limo.  The limo leaves, and Reigns runs in and chases but stops as limo gets too far away.

BACKSTAGE CHARLOTTE/RIC FLAIR (30 SEC)

  • Charlotte is getting ready for her match, and Ric Flair walks in to wish his daughter good luck.  Announcers put over that match is next.

COMMERCIAL #7 (9:12:30-9:16)

SEGMENT #8 (9:16-9:24)

MATCH FOR ROSTER SPOT CHARLOTTE (W/RIC FLAIR) VS. SASHA BANKS (7 MIN)

  • Charlotte has match won, but Ric Flair puts Sasha’s foot on bottom rope before three count.  Charlotte stands up, confused and stares at her father.  Sasha clubs her from behind, hits her finish, and gets the 1,2,3 for the victory.

  • Ric Flair gets in ring and makes out with Sasha.

BACKSTAGE VINCE MCMAHON/KANE (1 MIN)

  • Kane is in Vince’s office.  Asks Vince what his purpose is anymore.  Authority is gone.  He’s not Corporate Kane.  He’s not the Big Red Machine.  He has wrestled Stone Cold, The Rock, his brother, Mankind, John Cena, Randy Orton, you name them.  He looks at tonight’s card, and he is wrestling Heath Slater?  Vince says he has lost faith in Kane’s ability to draw.  But he will give him a chance tonight to prove he is still a top threat.  Instead of wrestling Slater, he will face Erick Rowan in a falls count anywhere – Street Fight.  If he wins, he will be guaranteed a WWE title shot.  But if he loses, he is gone from the WWE.

COMMERCIAL #8 (9:24-9:27)

SEGMENT #9 (9:27-9:39:30)

BACKSTAGE RIC FLAIR/SASHA BANKS/RENEE YOUNG (1 MIN)

  • Renee asks Ric why he screwed his daughter like that.  He says he screwed his daughter to screw Sasha.  He may be old in age, but he is still the limousine riding, jet flying, kiss stealing, wheeling and dealing son of a gun.  If anything, he taught Charlotte a lesson on the ruthlessness of the wrestling business.  Sasha says the only negative to having a Raw contract is that she won’t be in NXT to kick Charlotte’s ass anymore.  She is going to wreck the Divas division like a boss.

BACKSTAGE PAIGE/ALICIA FOX/NATALYA/TYSON KIDD (1 MIN)

  • Alicia Fox and Natalya are discussing their big win over the Bellas last week.  Paige comes in and kicks the crap out of both of them.  Tyson watches and wants no part.

  • Rowan goes over.  Kane gone from WWE

BACKSTAGE VINCE MCMAHON/LUKE HARPER (30 SEC)

COMMERCIAL #9 (9:39:30-9:43)

SEGMENT #10 (9:43-9:52)

BACKSTAGE BROCK LESNER/PAUL HEYMAN/RENEE YOUNG (1 MIN 30 SEC)

  • Michael Cole announced that during the break, Luke Harper got what he went to Vince McMahon’s office for, an Intercontinental Title rematch tonight against Dolph Ziggler.

  • Renee asks Heyman what he gave Big Show to cost Roman Reigns the match.  Heyman tells her that is none of her concern, and it is a privileged deal between him and his new client Big Show.  He did what he had to do to ensure that Seth Rollins was the referee.

  • Lesner cuts off Heyman, irritated, and says it didn’t matter to him who the referee was.   He would take Cena whether Rollins, Reigns, or anyone else is the referee.  He looks in the camera, and tells Rollins to do his job and stay out of his way.  Lesner walks off.

  • Renee asks Heyman what that was all about, Heyman tells her not to make something out of nothing.

OFF SITE: AMBULANCE SEGMENT BRAY WYATT/DEAN AMBROSE (3 MIN)

  • Camera man films as riding shotgun.  Bray tells an unconscious Ambrose how he is a lost dog and he needs to find his way back home.  He is going to leave him in the middle of nowhere.  He pulls over.  Opens back door, Ambrose jumps out.  They fight.  Ambrose hits dirty deeds and drives off in ambulance, stranding Bray and the camera man.

MATCH LAYLA VS. SUMMER RAE / PAIGE IN RING (4 MIN)

  • Paige enters after 30 seconds and destroys both participants.

  • Paige grabs mic, and cuts promo on how she has no match tonight, didn’t have one last week, and tonight Naomi has a title shot?  She is tired of being overlooked when she is without a doubt the most talented and dominant Diva in the WWE.  She is going to keep destroying Divas until she gets her due.

  • Vince McMahon entrance to stage.  Vince says he likes her initiative, and sees her stepping up to grab the brass ring.  He will give her a chance to earn a title shot by getting her hands on all the Divas of the WWE at once.  Next week on Raw, Paige will be in a #1 contenders Divas battle royal with the winner getting a title shot at the Royal Rumble.

  • Finish: Harper rolls out of ring, grabs chair.  Referee goes out and tries to stop him from bringing in chair.  Randy Orton slides in from crowd and RKO’s Ziggler and runs off.  Harper puts down chair, goes in ring, hits finisher, gets pin.  New I.C. Champ Luke Harper

COMMERCIAL #11 (10:09-10:12)

BACKSTAGE RANDY ORTON/RENEE YOUNG (1 MIN)

  • Renee Young asks Randy Orton to explain his actions.  He says he used to be known as the legend killer, well he is going to kill the legend of Dolph before it begins.  He says the only reason Dolph was in position to do what he did at Survivor Series was because he was injured.  Dolph will not take the spot vacated by Orton, because he is here to reclaim it.  Renee asks “What about Seth Rollins?  He is the one that put you out.  Why are you not after him?”  Orton looks at her, doesn’t answer, and walks off.

COMMERCIAL #12 (10:13:30-10:17)

SEGMENT #13 (10:17-10:23:30)

BACKSTAGE KANE/HEATH SLATER (30 SEC)

  • Kane is packing his bags.  Heath Slater walks in and says that he should have just kept his mouth shut and wrestled him.  Kane looks up at him and says nothing.  Slater shakes his head, laughs, and leaves.

BACKSTAGE DOLPH ZIGGLER/RENEE YOUNG (30 SEC)

  • Renee asks Ziggler’s thoughts about Randy Orton attacking him and costing him his championship.  Ziggler talks about always respecting Orton, that hasn’t done anything to him, wasn’t looking for a fight, but won’t back down either.  He challenges Orton to a match next week on Raw.

MATCH DIVAS CHAMPIONSHIP NIKKI BELLA (W/BRIE BELLA) VS. NAOMI (5 MIN)

BACKSTAGE NAOMI/JIMMY USO (30 SEC)

  • Naomi is excited backstage and looking at her belt.  Jimmy Uso comes in and Naomi hugs him.  He doesn’t hug back.  She asks what the matter is, and Jimmy says the only reason she has that title is The Miz.  Naomi slaps him and walks out.

BACKSTAGE NIKKI BELLA / BRIE BELLA (1 MIN)

  • Nikki is scolding and blaming Brie for her title loss.  Brie asks her how it was her fault, and Nikki said she should have prevented Miz from distracting her.  Brie says she is done playing Nikki’s game, that she has stayed with her past the 30 days and pretended to like it but this has to stop.  Nikki says unless Brie continues to be by her side, she will release Brie’s SEX TAPE to the WWE Universe.

BACKSTAGE NAOMI/MIZ/MIZDOW (30 SEC)

  • Naomi is waiting outside for a cab.  Miz (by himself) pulls up and offers her a ride.  She accepts and gets in the car.  A cut to a different camera and as the car pulls away, it is clear that Mizdow is behind the wheel as the stunt driver (purposely cheesy)

COMMERCIAL #14 (10:29-10:32)

SEGMENT #15 (10:32-10:33)

BACKSTAGE JOHN CENA / RENEE YOUNG (30 SEC)

  • Renee asks John Cena how he thinks his chances are tonight to reclaim the WWE Championship.  He reiterates about Night of Champions, and how he had him beat then, and he can beat him tonight.  He’s tired of a part-timer carrying the company, and that all changes now.

BACKSTAGE BROCK LESNER / PAUL HEYMAN (30 SEC)

  • As Lesner and Heyman make their way down the hall, the announcers plug that they are going to their final commercial break right now and the entire championship match will air with no interruptions next.

  • First cover by Cena, Rollins won’t count, Reigns stands up, Rollins counts.  Rollins counts fair from this point on.  Heyman questions Rollins’ actions, but Rollins points to Reigns.

  • Cena goes over after three AAs.  Rollins counts the three and Cena is the new WWE champion.  Reigns comes in to celebrate with Cena, Rollins hits Reigns with MITB suitcase and runs off.  Reigns chases.  Cena celebrates, Brock wakes up and destroys Cena.  F5’s, suplexes, you name it.

  • Rollins goes into parking lot.  Reigns follows and a limo runs him over.  Big Show is the driver.  Rollins runs back inside the arena.

  • Dolph Ziggler, Ryback, and Erick Rowan make save for Cena on Brock’s assault.  Ambrose drives in the arena in the ambulance.  Ziggler, Rowan and Ryback put Brock in the ambulance and get in back with him.  Ambrose drives out of arena.  Cena lays out Heyman.

  • Rollins runs back in and cashes in the MITB right now to face Cena.

MATCH WWE CHAMPIONSHIP JOHN CENA VS. SETH ROLLINS (12 MIN)

  • Near the end of match they go fight into the crowd.  Security pushes back the crowd as the wrestlers head back towards the ring area.  One security guy hits John Cena with a sledgehammer.  He takes off a wig and glasses - it is Triple H.  Rollins curb stomp in the ring, gets the 1-2-3 and is the new WWE Champion.
