THE HEAT OF A HEEL
When I look at Kevin Owens, I find it hard to buy into his character. I don’t want to take anything away from his pro wrasslin’ ability, because for his size he is phenomenally athletic. But the fact of the matter is, he is supposed to be a heel. It’s the job of a heel to create heat, to get booed, to get a negative reaction from the audience, live, TV or otherwise.
So to all those ‘smarks’ that seem to know the business inside out, why is it that they fall to their knees like a peasant to a King when it comes to their glorious Kevin Owens.
Surely if you all know the business so well then you understand that each time he comes out and gets cheered, that is him doing his job -- badly.
Yes, you could argue, “The times have changed”. That in this day and age, due to the desolation of Kayfabe and how much we as a fan-base know about what happens behind the curtain that that’s why the babyfaces are booed and the heels are cheered.
But the bottom line is, that in black and white, it’s the heels job to get booed and the babyfaces job to get cheered. The wrestling business is long past its sell-by-date and needs to be brought into 2015, and it can only evolve if those in it are willing to evolve with it. It seems to me that this generation of Indy wrassler’s are too busy walking around the locker room with massive erections for themselves over what the Internet Wrestling Community are tweeting them. That they think they are over just because the marks are telling them they are.
(Authors Note: The term mark is used by con-men. What they do is target a “Mark” and use CON-fidence to trick them into believing their bulls**t to get money from them. It is used in wrestling for the same reasons, because when it was just a carnival act, the promoters would sell the matches to the marks as if it was a real fight between two enormous gladiators who hated one another, in order to get their money.) The guys in the locker room seem to be concentrating too much on marking out for themselves and not enough time dedicating themselves on getting over the correct way.
When a heel comes out this day and age and gets booed -- that is a good heel.
I can imagine its hard to get over as a heel in this ‘Age of Social Media’ – But if Kevin Owens is as good as all the smarks think he is, then why isn’t he getting booed out of the arena each night? Regardless of whether the IWC love him or not, a good heel can generate heat in any given situation. A good heel can make even their biggest fans hate them – Example: Hulk Hogan.
I’ll tell you why Kevin Owens isn’t able to generate that heat – because he is too busy marking out for himself. He is too busy believing all the bulls**t that the marks are telling him. He is too busy thinking he is the next Steve Austin. He is too busy thinking that he is the future of pro wrestling.
Its not like the suits aren’t trying to get him over as a heel. They put him with John Cena of all people! That is essentially a golden ticket for a heel to get heat from the crowd.
Someone needs to give Kevin Owens a subscription to the WWE Network so he can go back and watch guys like The Iron Shiek, Bobby Heenan, Rick Rude, Freddie Blassie, The Fabulous Freebirds, Edge, Gorgeous George, Ted Dibiase, Chris Jericho, Sherri Martel, Vince McMahon..
… And of course the late and amazing Roddy Piper, because these people personified being a heel.
Even more recently with CM Punk, who was still able to get heat from the crowd when he needed it.
