The Brand Speaks: Finn Balor The Demonic Enigma? Not So Sure

October 28, 2015

Finn Balor came on to the NXT scene nearly a year ago. He was hyped for weeks prior to his debut leaving fans with lots of anticipation. I will admit, I was even interested to see what all of the hype was about only to be disappointed as time went on.

The weeks continued to pass as we saw: the entrance, the face/body paint, and creaturesque movements. As everyone (the WWE Universe), interest continued to grow with Balor, I was still stumped and didn’t see what everyone else saw and didn’t know why. So, I began to break Finn Balor, the character, down.

The commentary team continued to put over that Balor was this “enigmatic” borderline “demonic” character. By definition, you could say this true. But, there are so many flaws that come with this misleading title that has everyone in a “Balor Club” stupor.

For starters—the body/face paint. We only see him come out in all of his “demonry” when there is an NXT special. So what does that do when we see him come out in normal black wrestling trunks on a weekly basis during NXT without anything on looking like a normal guy?

You’ve lost me with the enigmatic demon there. Sure, they still have his entrance but he doesn’t do anything besides that to put over the character he’s supposed to be portraying. I will say that may not be necessarily on him and fault could lie with the company.

To be honest, when I first saw him along with the way they were hyping him, I didn’t think they were going to let him talk for a long time. This could have been an easy WWE way to get out of coming up with anything more creative, but would have been more effective than what they have done so far. They have let him talk, but nothing he says makes me believe that he is this demonic enigma. The promos being cut are just the same as any face out there. The end result, discontinuity with what we’re supposed to be believing.

Quick timeout here. I am by no means ripping on Finn Balor the person, I am simply commenting on my confusion with his CHARACTER.

A comparison needs to be made here!

When the commentary team first used the word enigma to describe Balor, I immediately thought of one person—Jeff Hardy. Why is that comparison made? Because Jeff Hardy ACTUALLY WAS AN ENIGMA! From his face paint to his body paint to his hair color to his ring attire to his artwork to his music to HIS MESSAGE, the list goes on and on. That was why I bought into the Jeff Hardy character because that was WHO JEFF HARDY WAS! It is easy to suspend your disbelief when what you are seeing is an extension of one’s self.

I understand it is entertainment and everyone needs a character; however, putting a gimmick on someone that doesn’t fit them shows on the TV screen. Even within this relatively short character analysis lies two of the biggest problems in wrestling today—believability and making stars.

All of this is just my opinion and you make take any way you would like.
